Radon Expert Discusses Radon Remediation Solutions

There is no safe radon level in your home. You have to constantly strive to keep it as low as possible. According to the US EPA, if your radon test reads4 pCi/L or more, you should adopt radon remediation solutions. There are many radon remediation systems to choose from:

radon remediation solutions

  1. Soil Depressurization Systems - The different kinds of soil depressurization systems include:
    • Active Sub-slab Depressurization - This is the most preferred radon remediation solution and recommended by the US EPA as it stops the radon before it enters your home. Also known as ASSD, this consists of one or more airtight suction vent pipes installed in the rock or soil below the home’s slab.
    • Passive Sub-slab Depressurization - PSS systems are similar to ASSD systems, except they do not have the suction fans. The radon remediation solutions relies on natural airflow and the pressure differential between the open air and the top layer of bedrock.
    • Drain Tile Suction - Economical than the depressurization systems, drain tile suction does not require any drilling beneath the foundation or installing vertical vent columns through the house. It involves blowing radon away from the house into the outside air.
  2. Block Wall Suction - Block wall suction systems create negative pressure inside the wall and vents the captured radon to a higher, outdoor level. However, this might not be a standalone radon remediation solution.
  3. Sump Hole Suction - Sump hole suction systems are mostly seen in homes that are built on at-grade slabs with sump hole cutouts for active water drainage.
Other radon remediation solutions include sealing and patching, lower level pressurization, heat recovery ventilator and active & passive crawlspace ventilation.
