Do All Homes Need Radon Testing?

With all of the information about radon gas and the need for radon gas testing in Pennsylvania counties, you may wonder, “Do all homes have radon?” The answer that many homes have no problem with radon gas. The average level of radon in the air outside, according to the EPA, is 0.4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). But the percentage of homes with high radon levels in our area make radon testing a very recommendable action.

In the following local counties, we list the percentage of surveyed homes with high or moderate risk of radon exposure- those with 4 pCi/L or higher radon gas levels, and those with 2-3.9pCi/L, respectively.

• Montgomery County – 33% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 24% at 2-3.9 pCi/L
• Bucks County – 38% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 22% at 2-3.9 pCi/L
• Berks County – 59% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 17% at 2-3.9 pCi/L
• Delaware County – 26% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 25% at 2-3.9 pCi/L
• Chester County – 43% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 21% at 2-3.9 pCi/L
• Lebanon County – 71% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 13% at 2-3.9 pCi/L
• Lehigh County – 61% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 16% at 2-3.9 pCi/L
• Lancaster County – 65% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 20% at 2-3.9 pCi/L
• Northampton County – 62% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 16% at 2-3.9 pCi/L
• Philadelphia County – 18% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 19% at 2-3.9 pCi/L
• York County – 63% at greater than 4 pCi/L and another 18% at 2-3.9 pCi/L

How Do I Know if I Have Radon?

You can only know if you have your home tested. The numbers above are from surveyed homes and your own home may have no radon gas present. However, since so many homes are impacted, and since radon gas is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, having radon testing performed in your home just makes sense.

Radon testing and remediation are relatively inexpensive compared to other home improvements and they can ensure that your family is safe in your home. Testing can be done with a home test, or you can have a professional come to your home. Either way, you will learn whether further action is necessary. Short and long-term tests are available and the EPA recommends taking the short-term test first for a preliminary result, then following up with another test if the results show radon gas above recommended levels.
