Choosing Between Short Term or Long Term Radon Testing

Determining the levels of radon gas is done by a certified radon testing professional. There are two basic types of radon testing - the short term and long term. Whichever method you choose, having your home tested for radon is a stepping stone to secure your family’s health.

Radon Testing - The Difference Between Short Term and Long Term Testing

Most homeowners in Pennsylvania and tri-state frequently choose the short term radon testing method. It is the quickest way to determine radon gas levels. Short-term radon testing uses equipment that includes an alpha track, electret ion chamber, and the charcoal liquid scintillation detectors. The material is set to remain in your home within 2 to 90 days. The EPA urges that radon tests should be done for a minimum of 48 hours.

Radon gas levels vary on a day-to-day basis and season. The Environment Protection Agency recognizes the temporal variation of radon levels and imposes short-term radon testing not as accurate as the long-term radon testing. EPA recommends undergoing a second short radon test for results above ten pCi/L. However, radon remediation is highly enforced for radon gas levels above four pCi/L.

Long-term radon testing, on the other hand, uses similar equipment such as the alpha track and electret detectors. The only difference between these methods is that the long-term as it implies requires more time to provide a reading that will determine your home’s year-round average radon level.

EPA recommends to test your home every year (for short term) and at least every two years for long-term radon testing. Radon gas levels may vary and change indefinitely. Radon testing is inexpensive and is a necessity to ensure your family’s health. Get your homes tested by a radon testing company and have it remediated or undergo mitigation if high levels of radon are detected. Avoid last minute problems and keep your entire family safe and sound!
